The outside water pressure increases with depth and so the stresses on the hull also increase with depth. The hull of a submarine must be able to withstand the forces created by the outside water pressure being greater than the inside air pressure. The depths to which submarines can dive are limited by the strengths of their hulls. We also learned about depth ratings.ĭepth ratings are primary design parameters and measures of a submarine’s ability to operate underwater. It became pretty common to understand that everyone dove together and everyone came back together. The depths we operated in made it nearly impossible to do a free ascent so the only option was to bring the boat back to the surface. It wouldn’t be until I got to my first boat when I would learn that even though there were two escape trunks on the boat, no one would ever actually use them. Frankly, I was as afraid as anyone but made the descent with no problems. It was blow and go from a lock out wearing a Steinke hood. At that point, we even had to go through submarine escape training in the old tower. In sub school, we learned a lot of theory and a generic submarine layout. But once I joined the Navy, there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to be a submariner. Even the loss of the Scorpion occurred before I raised my right hand. I was a young kid when Thresher went down but I was a news junky even at that age and had read every story that I could get my hands on. When I went to submarine school over fifty years ago, we learned about all the things that could go wrong as we operated a modern submarine in a hostile environment. Watching the news stories and understanding basic submarine engineering, I knew from the outset that chances of a rescue were infinitesimally small and even if they could reach the craft (assuming it didn’t implode) how would they be able to rescue any survivors? Even though I write stories about the boats and do a lot of public presentations, I do actually have a pretty full life even in my third retirement. The whole thing has brought back many memories that have long been submerged. I can assure you I have heard the same questions many times since the accident. ![]() I’m willing to bet that if you are someone who was at one point “Qualified in Submarines” and someone around you was aware that you were a submariner, you have been queried about the recent loss of the little submersible that was on its way to see the Titanic. ![]() So you were a submariner? What do you think about…. I love and respect my fellow submariners still on patrol and only publish these generic submarine statistics to make a point. ![]() As always, I do not reveal information from my actual submarine experience. Note: I collected much of the technical information for this story from open source documentation. ![]() Spend your sixty dollars getting a putting lesson instead – it’ll go a whole heckuva lot farther than the ProAim glasses. It’s quite easy to duplicate a simple putting grid with tees, tape, some shafts or dowel rods, or string. Not only is the ProAim not worth $59.95, but I feel it could be detrimental to your putting game. Cock it a little to the left and you’re warmly welcomed to Pull City. Tilt your head a little to the right and the ProAim dutifully helps you push your putts. What’s worse, if your head is cocked to the side a little, the ProAim will steer you in that direction. We carry a complete selection of golf trainers including training aids designed to improve your driving, putting, alignment, tempo, distance, swing path, grip & short game. For most people, that means the grid will be two to three feet away from their ball. As the illustration to the right shows, the ProAim projects its grid where your face is aimed, not where your eyes are looking. Most people don’t jam their chin into their chest when they putt and their faces are not pointed straight down at the ground. Where are you looking? Probably not straight down at your feet. Close your eyes and let them move back to the center so they’re looking straight in the direction of your face. ![]() The ProAim projects its little grid just fine, but it does so where your head is pointed, not where your eyes are looking. My problem is paying $59.95 for something that simply doesn’t work. My problems with the ProAim were far more serious than wearing glasses and needing an Aleve now and then. Whether it’s because my eyes were having trouble focusing without my glasses or because the ProAim was squeezing my temples I can’t say for sure. The headache went away fifteen minutes after removing the ProAim. The first time I tried the ProAim for more than just a few minutes, I got a headache. The ProAim is also fairly small: my head isn’t abnormally large, but the ProAim’s frame squeezed my head like it was an orange and the glasses had a hankering for some fresh OJ. If you’ve not got 20/20 sight or a pair of contacts, you’re simply out of luck. First, if you wear glasses, you’re simply not going to be able to use the ProAim and to see clearly at the same time. In the end, my problems with the ProAim were plenty. The pendulum stroke requires some wrist pronation and supination to keep the putter face square throughout the motion. Proponents of the hinged door method say that the putter remains square to your body the whole time, which is much easier to control than the pendulum stroke. Interestingly enough, Pelz’s current star student – Phil Mickelson – employs the stroke used by most of the greatest putters: more of a “hinged door” stroke that opens the putter face on the way back and closes it on the way through. A straight-back, straight-through stroke (also called the pendulum stroke) is preached by legendary short-game guru Dave Pelz and is employed by many good, solid putters. The ProAim’s goal is to ensure a straight-back, straight-through putting stroke that keeps the putter face square to the intended target line. You see a simple putting alignment grid (again, see image just below). Thicker pieces of plastic concentrate the light in a parallel-lines-with-crossbar pattern and bounce the light off of a darkened lens back to your eye. Daylight enters the yellow piece of plastic beside your right eye. The product is endorsed by Butch Harmon (hardly a short game guru), Natalie Gulbis (who’s yet to win on the LPGA Tour), Mark Calcavecchia, Craig Parry, and the most respectable man of the bunch, Irishman Darren Clarke. The ProAim is the Professional Golf Teacher’s Association’s “Training Aid of the Year” and a Golf Digest “Top 10 Training Aid.” “Straight back, straight through” others say. Samara Weaving is especially watchable, playing a woman who is both exceptionally resilient and terrified. That’s not to say the performances aren’t good. It’s not that the movie isn’t funny: it is, but in more of a dry, ironic style than in a side-splitting laugh-out-loud way.
